Silver Ion Generator

Imagine adding pure water to a material and generating a solution which:

  • is completely safe to handle,
  • destroys bacteria, fungi and viruses,
  • may be widely used over extended time and not engender resistant strains,
  • costs about 25¢ for a life-time supply.

The solution is a very mild concentration of silver ions (Ag+) in water.
It is generated as metallic silver is submerged in pure water in a light-tight container.

That no major effort has been made to expand the role of silver ions in human health is extraordinary, considering its long history and the enormous range of modern research data and its huge advantage in simplicity and lack of side effects. Here lies an opportunity and a duty for the scientific community to make a unique contribution to human health and well-being.

My hope is that, through teaching these benefits to those interested, and by making economical silver ion generators available to anyone, they will become ubiquitous, valuable household items. Knowing where to use silver ion solution and being able to generate it anywhere at virtually no cost will reduce disease and human suffering - especially in underdeveloped areas of the world. The following explains the science of this system and the engineering of its optimization.

The Science
Silver surfaces submerged in pure water react with dissolved oxygen, forming a very slightly soluble silver oxide film which dissolves and produces a very dilute aqueous silver ion solution. The reaction occurs at the silver / water interface and the initial surface erosion rate is about 0.002 nanometers / minute.

The Engineering
Because silver ions are released only from the surface of silver metal, the rate of silver ion release is directly proportional to silver's exposed surface area. Reducing the thickness of silver exposes more silver atoms to water and dissolved oxygen and increases the rate of silver oxidation and dissolution.

silver, in the form of: cost / in2 of silver relative cost
silver coin, 1 troy oz. = $4.30 250
silver foil, 1 mil thick = $3.00 175
silver-plated nylon filaments, woven = $0.016 1

A rectangle of silver-plated nylon yarn, woven into cloth, placed in 2 ounces of aerated, distilled water, at room temperature, produces a 1 ppm (1000 ppb) silver ion concentration in 1 hour.

The Biology
Silver ions (Ag+) kill pathogens by disrupting cell:

  • surfaces - by binding to sites on surface proteins; cells rupture and die.
  • metabolism - binding to sites on internal enzymes; respiration stops and cells die.
  • replication - binding to DNA and RNA; cell replication stops and cells die.
