HVAC Waters

closed loops

Any system which circulates water, without intentional water loss, is a "closed" loop.

Automobile heating and cooling is accomplished with a closed water loop. A mixture of water, antifreeze and corrosion inhibitors picks up and loses heat as it flows from water pump to engine block to cabin heater to radiator to water pump, etc.

Closed loops within buildings carry hot (heated) or cool (chilled) water.

A loop which is air-tight and water-tight requires little to no chemical treatment because corrosive or scaling impurities enter only once - when the system is filled. However, most loops are not truly closed.

Loops take on air - introducing carbon dioxide and oxygen which corrode system metals. Loops leak water - which is automatically replaced with tap water containing calcium and magnesium carbonates which precipitate as hard water scale.

Learning of changes (monitoring) and compensating for them (chemical treatment) forestalls system failure and expensive repair.
