Beware!
Sodium nitrite, mixed with sodium borate (pH
buffer):
- is poisonous
- oxidizes iron and steel to abrasive, black iron oxide
powder
- hardens rubber seals and gaskets
- increases water's conductivity, thus promoting bi-metal corrosion
- forms crystals (on evaporation) which abrade pump seals and
valves
Systems
containing water and
50 ppm nitrite or more, replace system water with fresh make-up,
then
begin a responsible monitoring and treatment program.
Systems containing
glycol antifreeze and 50 ppm nitrite or more -
deionize the water,
then
begin a responsible monitoring and treatment program.
(under "Procedures", see "save your glycol by deionizing the
water")
